Born as Mumtaz Jehan Begum Dehlavi on February 14, 1933, she was one of the most beautiful actresses of Bollywood. In fact, it wouldn't be incorrect to call her the 'Marilyn Monroe' of India. Whether it is the looks or her personal life which was filled with pain, hardship and tragedy...Madhubala resembled the Hollywood blonde in more than one way.
After her father lost his job at the Imperial Tobacco Company in Peshawar, he relocated to Delhi followed by Mumbai. There, the family endured many hardships. Madhubala's three sisters and two brothers died at the age of five and six.
The dock explosion and fire of April 14, 1944 wiped out their small home. The family survived only because they had gone to see a film at a local theater. With his six remaining daughters to provide for, Khan, and the young Madhubala, began to pay frequent visits to Bombay film studios to look for work. At the age of 9, this was Madhubala's introduction to the movie industry, which would provide financial help to her family.
Some trivia:
- While describing Madhubala's beauty, actor Minu Mumtaz once said, "Her complexion was so fair and translucent that when she had "paan" you could almost see the red color going down her throat."
- Madhubala's father Ataullah Khan was very strict and hence the actress was rarely seen at parties, premieres, picnics, races or film festivals. She kept to herself and mingled only with her colleagues at the studio.
- Madhubala began working at a very tender age and never went to school. She spoke Pashtu at home but could not speak a word of English.
- She obeyed her father without a question, thereby ruining her freedom, space and life. Her highly emotional nature added to her disaster.
- Dilip Kumar was head over heels in love with Madhubala. However, her father disapproved of him. In fact, he even went to court once to stop them on an outdoor location for Naya Daur.
- Legendary director Frank Capra was eager to bring the mysterious Indian beauty to Hollywood and launch an international career–but his efforts were halted quickly by Madhubala’s conservative father. --She was sought after by every great Bollywood director and actor from Dilip Kumar to Dev Anand and even romanced and married playback singer Kishore Kumar at the height of her illustrious career. For years, Madhubala was the Queen of Bollywood and the heart of millions.
Madhubala had hole in her heart and her body would produce extra blood. So it would spill out from the nose and mouth.She died on February 23, 1969, shortly after her 36th birthday. She was buried with her personal diary at the Santa Cruz Muslim cemetery by her family and husband Kishore Kumar.
