Fake currency scandals have become widespread in northern India. Police officials on Wednesday arrested a suspect carrying bundles of fake currency worth up to $18,000.

Police officials in the Poonch district of India's northern state of Jammu and Kashmir seized fake Indian currency worth about $18,000 on Wednesday.

Acting on a tip, the police arrested the suspect from a border area in Poonch with bundles of fake currency.

[Ashkoor Ahmed Wani, Senior Superintendent of Police, Poonch]:
"For the past several days we have been receiving reports of fake currencies being exchanged. Some 10 to 15 days back we seized fake cash amounting to about $800. It was a continuous drive. Since two or three days, we were getting information that a deal is going to take place in Poonch. We caught hold of fake currency worth almost $18,000."

Wani says the possibility of the fake currency racket being carried out from across the border cannot be ruled out.

Police officials say the fake currency racket is widespread in the state and investigations to uncover more are underway.
