George Gordon Byron - Damaetas

George Gordon Byron - Damaetas

In law an infant, and in years a boy, br In mind a slave to every vicious joy; br From every sense of shame and virtue wean'd; br In lies an adept, in deceit a fiend; br Versed in hypocrisy, while yet a child; br Fickle as wind, of inclinations wild; br Women his dupe, his heedless friend a tool; br Old in the world, though scarcely broke from school; br Damætas ran through all the maze of sin, br And found the goal when others just begin: br Even still conflicting passions shake his soul, br And bid him drain the dregs of pleasure's bowl; br But, pall'd with vice, he breaks his former chain, br And what was once his bliss appears his bane.
