Christina Georgina Rossetti - An Apple-Gathering

Christina Georgina Rossetti - An Apple-Gathering

I plucked pink blossoms from mine apple tree br And wore them all that evening in my hair: br Then in due season when I went to see br I found no apples there. br With dangling basket all along the grass br As I had come I went the selfsame track: br My neighbours mocked me while they saw me pass br So empty-handed back. br br Lilian and Lilias smiled in trudging by, br Their heaped-up basket teazed me like a jeer; br Sweet-voiced they sang beneath the sunset sky, br Their mother's home was near. br br Plump Gertrude passed me with her basket full, br A stronger hand than hers helped it along; br A voice talked with her thro' the shadows cool br More sweet to me than song. br br Ah Willie, Willie, was my love less worth br Than apples with their green leaves piled above? br I counted rosiest apples on the earth br Of far less worth than love. br br So once it was with me you stooped to talk br Laughing and listening in this very lane: br To think that by this way we used to walk br We shall not walk again! br br I let my neighbours pass me, ones and twos br And groups; the latest said the night grew chill, br And hastened: but I loitered, while the dews br Fell fast I loitered still.
