William Cowper - The Shining Light

William Cowper - The Shining Light

My former hopes are fled, br My terror now begins; br I feel, alas! that I am dead br In trespasses and sins. br br Ah, whither shall I fly? br I hear the thunder roar; br The Law proclaims Destruction nigh, br And Vengeance at the door. br br When I review my ways, br I dread impending doom: br But sure a friendly whisper says, br "Flee from the wrath to come." br br I see, or think I see, br A glimmering from afar; br A beam of day, that shines for me, br To save me from despair. br br Forerunner of the sun, br It marks the pilgrim's way; br I'll gaze upon it while I run, br And watch the rising day.
