Lucy Maud Montgomery - The Gulls

Lucy Maud Montgomery - The Gulls

I br br Soft is the sky in the mist-kirtled east, br Light is abroad on the sea, br All of the heaven with silver is fleeced, br Holding the sunrise in fee. br Lo! with a flash and uplifting of wings br Down where the long ripples break, br Cometh a bevy of glad-hearted things, br 'Tis morn, for the gulls are awake. br br br II br br Slumberous calm on the ocean and shore br Comes with the turn of the tide; br Never a strong-sweeping pinion may soar, br Where the tame fishing-boats ride! br Far and beyond in blue deserts of sea br Where the wild winds are at play, br There may the spirits of sea-birds be free br 'Tis noon, for the gulls are away. br br br III br br Over the rim of the sunset is blown br Sea-dusk of purple and gold, br Speed now the wanderers back to their own, br Wings the most tireless must fold. br Homeward together at twilight they flock, br Sated with joys of the deep br Drowsily huddled on headland and rock br 'Tis night, for the gulls are asleep.
