Robert William Service - Balloon

Robert William Service - Balloon

I bought my little grandchild Ann br A bright balloon, br And I was such a happy man br To hear her croon. br She laughed and babbled with delight, br So gold its glow, br As by a thread she held it tight, br Then--let it go. br br As if it gloried to be free br It climbed the sky; br But oh how sorrowful was she, br And sad was I! br And when at eve with sobbing cry br She saw the moon, br She pleaded to the pensive sky br For her balloon. br br O Little One, I pray that you br In years to be, br Will hold a tiny baby too, br And know its glee; br That yours will always be the thrill br And joy of June, br And that you never, never will br Cry for the moon.
