Victor James Daley - A King in Exile

Victor James Daley - A King in Exile

O THE Queen may keep her golden br Crown and sceptre of command! br I would give them both twice over br To be King of Babyland. br Sure, it is a wondrous country br Where the beanstalks grow apace, br And so very near the moon is br You could almost stroke her face. br br And the dwellers in that country br Hold in such esteem their King, br They believe that if he chooses br He can do—just anything! br br And, although his regal stature br May be only four-feet-ten, br Think him tallest, strongest, bravest, br Noblest, wisest, best of men. br br Ah, how fondly I remember br The good time serene and fair, br In the bygone years when I, too, br Was a reigning monarch there! br br But my subjects they discrowned me br When they’d older, colder, grown; br And they took away my sceptre, br And upset my royal throne. br br Yet, although a King in Exile, br Without subjects to command, br I am glad at heart to think I br Once was King of Babyland.
