Henry Lawson - The Free Selector's Daughter

Henry Lawson - The Free Selector's Daughter

I met her on the Lachlan Side - br A darling girl I thought her, br And ere I left I swore I'd win br The free-selector's daughter. br br I milked her father's cows a month, br I brought the wood and water, br I mended all the broken fence, br Before I won the daughter. br br I listened to her father's yarns, br I did just what I `oughter', br And what you'll have to do to win br A free-selector's daughter. br br I broke my pipe and burnt my twist, br And washed my mouth with water; br I had a shave before I kissed br The free-selector's daughter. br br Then, rising in the frosty morn, br I brought the cows for Mary, br And when I'd milked a bucketful br I took it to the dairy. br br I poured the milk into the dish br While Mary held the strainer, br I summoned heart to speak my wish, br And, oh! her blush grew plainer. br br I told her I must leave the place, br I said that I would miss her; br At first she turned away her face, br And then she let me kiss her.
