Joanna Baillie - The Address Of Odusseus To The Greeks, At Thermpoylae, On The 20th Of July, 1822

GRECIANS ! ye know what spot, br Decides to-day your lot-- br Thermopylæ br Again must see br Blood wash away our blot. br The Lord has brought the spoil, br The victim to our toil-- br What priest can falter br At Freedom's altar, br This blest, this hallow'd soil? br br Now we have known the worst, br Retreat were doubly curst; br The life it saves br May tempt those slaves,-- br Not Greeks, whose bonds are burst. br Let servile Dacia woo br The Northern Tartar's crew-- br Alone our band br On Grecian land br Can keep the swords it drew. br Tho' Hellas, roused from sleep, br Resumes her native deep , br On earth the foe br Must crouch as low, br Or Moslem matrons weep. br The tyrant's die is cast-- br Greeks! swear it by the past ,-- br The present hour br Which brings you power,-- br The future bright at last. br br Swear, since our patriarch's corse br Was freedom's gory source, br New wrongs endured, br Revenge secured, br Shall nerve your country's force. br Our country! would ye change her, br Tho' lured and left to danger, br For all the smiles br The Seven Isles br Boast from the ambiguous stranger? br St. Michael's diamond rays br Outshine not patriot's praise, br Unless that star br Displayed more far br 'The pledge of happier days.' br Look at our glorious sky!-- br A dome for those who die; br Before we quail, br Yon sun shall fail, br Which lights that canopy.
