Katharine Lee Bates - Wings

GRAY gulls that wheeled and dipped and rose br Where tossing crests like Alpine snows br Would shimmer and entice; br A stormy petrel, Judas soul, br Dark wanderer of the waste, whose goal br No mariner hath seen; br And flaming from the vanished sun br A wondrous wing vermilion, br A bird of Paradise, br A soaring wing that shone so far br The orient horizon bar br Flushed, and the sea between br Like an Arabian carpet glowed br With changeful hues where subtly flowed br Some magical device; br And one pale plume in heaven's dim dome br Above that fairy-colored foam, br The new moon's ghostly sheen.
