Matthew Prior - Nonpareil

Matthew Prior - Nonpareil

Let others from the Town retire, br And in the fields seek new delight; br My Phillis does such joys inspire, br No other objects please my sight. br br In her alone I find whate'er br Beauties a country landscape grace; br No shade so lovely as her hair, br Nor plain so sweet as is her face. br br Lilies and roses there combine, br More beauteous than in flowery field; br Transparent is her skin so fine, br To this each crystal stream must yield. br br Her voice more sweet than warbling sound, br Though sung by nightingale or lark; br Her eyes such lustre dart around, br Compared to them the sun is dark. br br Both light and vital heat they give, br Cherish'd by them my love takes root; br From her kind looks does life receive, br Grows a fair plant, bears flowers and fruit. br br Such fruit I ween did once deceive br The common parent of mankind, br And made transgress our mother Eve, br Poison its core, though fair its rind. br br Yet so delicious is its taste, br I cannot from the bait abstain, br But to th' enchanting pleasure haste, br Though I were sure 'twould end in pain.
