SAN BERNARDINO, CALIFORNIA — The massacre in San Bernardino, California on Wednesday, in which at least 14 people were killed and 17 more injured, is the 355th mass shooting in the United States this year.

It was also the second mass shooting of the day, after one person was killed and three injured in Savanna, Georgia, the Washington Post reported.

Shootingtracker.com defines a mass shooting an incident in which at least four people, including the gunman, are killed or wounded.

According to website's data, there have been 355 mass shootings in the United States so far this year, compared to 336 in 2014 and 364 in 2013. The majority of mass shootings this year have taken place in the Southern and Western parts of the country.

According to the Small Arms Survey, there are an estimated 270 million firearms in the U.S., or 89 per 100 residents, making the U.S. the No. 1 country in the world for gun ownership. According to the Guardian, since U.S. President Barack Obama took office, the demand for guns has been rising. Last year for example, Smith & Wesson sales hit a record high of $626 million, up 6.7 percent from $587.5 million in 2013.

A record FBI background checks of firearms owners were processed on Black Friday this year, up to five percent from 2014. There were 175,754 checks on Black Friday 2014, 144,758 in 2013, and 154,873 in 2012, according to the Guardian.

A 2014 survey by the Pew Research Center revealed that the majority of people who own a gun in the United States are non-Hispanic white Republican males aged between 50 and 65 or over the age of 65.
