A team of researchers is suggesting the World Health Organization’s general activity guideline be significantly increased.

According to the World Health Organization, people should engage in 10 metabolic equivalent hours of activity per week, which can be achieved by walking for 150 minutes or running for 75 minutes.
A team of researchers hailing from the University of Queensland, the University of Washington, and Dartmouth College is suggesting that general guideline be significantly increased.
After reviewing data from 174 studies dating back as far as 1980, the group found that putting in a weekly minimum of 50 metabolic equivalent hours of activity greatly decreased the risk of stroke, heart disease, and some cancers.
In real-time terms, that means spending 6 to 8 hours a week running or between 15 and 20 hours walking briskly.
The study’s authors encourage individuals to make physical activity part of their regular lifestyle.
Dr. Lennert Veerman, one of the researchers, said, “This could mean being more active at work, doing housework, using stairs where possible, gardening or running, and using active transport such as walking or cycling.  The trick is to incorporate physical activity into daily life, making it a habit rather than a chore."
