Hundreds of thousands of Shiite pilgrims converged on the holy Iraqi city of Karbala to celebrate Ashoura. It marks the 7th-century death of the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Imam Hussein, who was killed in a battle near Karbala. The outcome of the battle caused the split between Shiites and Sunni Muslims.
