Video Captures Longline Fishing in Honiara, Solomon Islands

pVideo has emerged showing a longline fishing crew loading fish into a truck in Honiara, Solomon Islands, on August 14.ppThe footage was taken by Craig Capehart while on a 16-day SCUBA diving trip to check on the health of the reefs and sea life in the Solomon Islandsa.ppThe video shows a crew loading a variety of fish into a truck that eventually got so full that they couldn’t get the door shut.ppThe uploader said: "At first, I thought the long thin poles on the side of the boat were fishing rods, but I soon realized they are antennas attached to buoys that transmit GPS coordinates so that the ship can find the lines and return easily to the correct location to haul in the catch.pp“I really do wonder what happened to the very many sharks that must have been caught on the long lines. It seems impossible that none were caught. I wonder if they were finned then thrown back into the ocean to die. It seems unlikely that a whole shark would be thrown back when fins have such great commercial value in parts of Asia.
