A study led by scientist Kevin Hall at the
National Institutes of Health examined the
effects of the keto diet vs. a low-fat, plant-based diet.
Out of a group of 20 people, half followed the keto diet and half followed the high-carb, low-fat, plant-based diet for two weeks.
After the two weeks, the keto group switched to the plant-based diet and vice versa for another two weeks.
When on the low-fat diet, Hall found participants cut about
700 daily calories on average vs. 300 daily calories with keto.
However, insulin levels on the low-fat diet were "through the roof."
Given the short time frame of the study, it's unclear if the keto diet may have produced better results but according to this study, a low-fat diet can be just as effective in helping to lose weight.
