I had the opportunity to visit Ecuador back in July of 2023. We explored the Andes region including the famous Cotopaxi Volcano, one of the highest active volcanos on earth, as well as Ecuador's highest peak Chimborazo at 20,549ft (6,263m). Chimborazo is actually the highest mountain on the planet when measured from Earth's center due to Earth's equatorial bulge. The area around Chimborazo was full of wild vicuñas which are a wild camelid species related to domesticated alpacas and llamas. Interestingly vicuñas were once driven nearly to extinction in Ecuador. They were brought back along with a starting population donated by Peru and their population has since been successfully restored in the Chimborazo Wildlife Reserve. br We visited Ecuador's capital city Quito with its blend of Spanish and indigenous culture as well as the colorful indigenous market in Otavalo. br br From the Andes we drove down past Baños and then to Shell where we took a small bush plane deep into the Amazon rainforest. We stayed at Kapawi Ecolodge which is run by members of the Achuar tribe. This remote area is teeming with wildlife and plant species.
