Barzaga is currently serving a 60-day suspension after the House of Representatives adopted the Ethics and Privileges Committee’s recommendation following a complaint filed against him. During an interview with media covering the tree lighting event, Barzaga said he would remain in Cebu only until Dec. 5, 2025. He expressed hopes of meeting with local officials who shared his political views, specifically mentioning Cebu Gov. Pamela Baricuatro, a known supporter of former president Rodrigo Duterte.
