Babies Test Positive for Marijuana from Soaps and Shampoos - as part of the news series by GeoBeats.

A study done by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has shown that some commercial baby soaps can cause a false positive for marijuana in urine tests. Products such as “Johnson & Johnson’s Bedtime Bath, CVS Night-Time Baby Bath, Aveeno Baby Soothing Relief Creamy Wash and Aveeno Baby Wash & Shampoo” were shown to cause a positive result for metabolites like THC that are present in marijuana. More accurate tests can be ordered after a drug screen to confirm or negate a false positive, but these tests are significantly more expensive than the urine tests used by hospitals. Researchers started the study after an alarming number of newborns were testing positive for marijuana.

The study brings up another point about the consequences of a false positive on a drug test, which “can lead to involvement by social services or false child abuse allegations… it is important for laboratories and providers to be aware of this potential source for false positive screening results and to consider confirmation before initiating interventions.”
Other substances can cause you to test positive for marijuana as well, such as ibuprofen, naproxen, promethazine, and riboflavin, among others.
