Human papillomavirus (HPV) causes nearly all cases of cervical cancer. Each day, approximately 33 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer in the United States (about 12,000 women per year). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are an estimated 79 million HPV infections in the US, including more than 14 million new HPV infections per year.

Most people clear HPV. But in those who don’t, it can lead to cervical cancer or other significant diseases. There is no way to predict which people will clear the virus.

Throughout the month of January – Cervical Health Awareness Month – and beyond, Merck is raising awareness of HPV and the impact of cervical cancer in the US. This video contains information about the disease and highlights the importance of speaking with a doctor about ways to help protect against cervical cancer.

By sharing this video with your audience, you can help raise awareness of a public health issue in the US. Viewers may also visit www.hpv.com for more facts from Merck about HPV and the diseases it can cause.
