A refurbished blue bus is now operating on the streets of San Francisco offering homeless citizens some relief. While there’s no food or beds inside the vehicle, there are changing areas, showers and toilets which will give the homeless a place to freshen up and have privacy.

By Spring of 2015, there will be four operating buses on the road. They're going to provide about 2,000 showers a week to the city’s estimated 35 hundred homeless people. The buses are the brainchild of Doniece Sandoval.

She’s worked for the past two years to make the campaign to clean homeless San Franciscans a reality.

Sandoval commented “It’s been in idea stage for so long, to actually see the result is unbelievable… With hygiene comes dignity, and with dignity comes opportunity. So hopefully, it will open other doors for people."

Sandoval calls her bus program ‘Lava Mae’. She arranged a deal with the Public Utilities Commission to use city water from fire hydrants for the bus showers.
