A puppy born a hermaphrodite, with both male and female organs, has been adopted; it had successfully undergone surgery to remove the male parts.

Charcoal, a black Chihuahua mix puppy born a hermaphrodite, was adopted from the West Valley Humane Society in Idaho.

The two-month old puppy, part of a litter of five, had both male and female reproductive parts.

Cherisse Faulkner from the Humane Society notes that it “was the only one that looked a little bit different out of the litter.”

When it had difficulty urinating, doctors decided to give the dog surgery and make it a female.

Faulkner explains, “They decided to make him one sex or the other and they chose female because it was going be less of a stressful surgery on the dog. It was less intrusive to make it a female rather than go for a male.”

The procedure was a success, and Charcoal regained her energy to become an active puppy.

The dog, which was also neutered, has since been adopted.
