In Anhui province, located in eastern China, Mr. Ye’s wife cheerfully told her friends that she was expecting her second child.

But, Mr. Ye wasn’t cheerful about her pregnancy at all.

The couple had met and married 6 years ago, Mrs. Ye got pregnant almost immediately and a few months later the couple had a healthy baby girl. Mr. Ye loved his daughter, but was disappointed she wasn’t a boy, so the couple agreed they’d apply to have a second child 5 years later.

This is because China’s one child policy allows couples with rural residences to apply to have a second child if their first child is mentally or physically disabled or female.

Unfortunately, five years later the Ye’s learned that Mr. Ye was sterile. They suspect it was because he took a job in a chemical factory away from his family for the last few years and may have been exposed to dangerous chemicals during his employment.

Mr. Ye said he’d resigned himself to being forced to follow the one-child policy and so took a job closer to home to spend more time with his daughter. But then he noticed his wife’s attitude towards him had changed and that she seemed to be putting on some weight.

He decided to check her phone and discovered that his wife had told all her friends that she was pregnant.

Mr. Ye petitioned for a divorce, stating that he refused to raise another man’s child. His wife has agreed to grant custody of their daughter to Mr. Ye and to pay child care to her husband.
