A sex tape involving Mark Reilly, the former boss of GlaxoSmithKline in China, was the trigger for a major probe into corruption into GSK's Chinese operations.

The footage of Reilly and his Chinese girlfriend together in their Shanghai apartment was allegedly sent to board members of the pharmaceutical firm on March 16th last year by a source called 'gskwhistleblower' in a possible blackmail attempt.

The company allowed Reilly to hire Peter Humphrey, an investigator, to discover who had sent the video. The report, codenamed 'Project Scorpion' failed to establish the perpetrator and through his investigation, Humphrey aroused the suspicion of the Chinese government, which launched a big corruption investigation against GSK two months later.

Reilly was charged with presiding over a web of corruption and bribery by the Chinese in May. The investigation by the Chinese authorities is ongoing. If found guilty, Reilly could face life in prison.
