Researchers say they’ve uncovered evidence that the handled, ground-edge axe was first created and used in Australia.

The ground-edge, handled axe is something many still rely upon today, but there has been a great deal of mystery and debate regarding where the tool was first developed.
Researchers at the Australian National University, the University of Western Australia, and the University of Sydney, say they’ve uncovered evidence that the implement was first created and used in Australia.
An examination of stone pieces found in Western Australia’s Kimberley region revealed the fragments date back between 46,000 and 49,000 years.
That coincides with the first appearance of humans in the area.
