The Obama administration has declared that the government of Russia was behind some election interference, but Donald Trump has a different point of view on the issue.
During a recent interview with Time magazine, the president-elect commented, “I don’t believe they interfered. That became a laughing point, not a talking point, a laughing point. Any time I do something, they say ‘oh, Russia interfered.’”
He also noted, “It could be Russia. And it could be China. And it could be some guy in his home in New Jersey…it could have been Russia and it could have been any one of many other people. Sources or even individuals.”
Trump’s view on the matter differs from the declarations made by the U.S. intelligence.
In early October, a statement from the Department of Homeland Security and James R. Clapper, director of national intelligence, noted that email leaks, such as those affecting the Democratic National Committee, “are intended to interfere with the U.S. election process.”
It further asserted, “We believe, based on the scope and sensitivity of these efforts, that only Russia’s senior-most officials could have authorized these activities.”
