Ex-Labour minister Alan Johnson condemns 'intolerant sectarian left' behind Corbyn rule
FORMER Labour minister Alan Johnson has blasted his own party under the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn, branding it “intolerant” and “militant”. The politician, who chose not to stand in the snap election, admitted Labour’s surprise success meant his hopes of taking back control from the Labour leader had been thrown out.The former Home Secretary also said he regretted his party had succumbed to a “narrow sectarian left”.He told RT’s News Thing, the state of his party reminded him of “militant in the 1980s” before telling host Sam Delaney the election result signalled a turning point for Labour.Mr Johnson agreed his chance to “wrestle back control” had now disappeared. He said: “Yes. The honest answer to that is yes. But just as Jeremy Corbyn and the campaign group around him were vehemently opposed to the leadership of Gordon Brown and Tony Blair and Neil Kinnock and almost everyone before that… I feel the same way.“I feel this narrow sectarian left that is intolerant of other views is what is there behind Jeremy Corbyn, who’s thoroughly decent and never says a bad word about anyone.“But behind him, there’s a kind of something that reminds me of militant in the early 1980s.”The comments come after Labour rebels defied Mr Corbyn after backing Labour MP Chuka Umunna’s Queen’s Speech amendment to keep Britain in the single market and customs union.



A total of 49 rebels defied their party leader’s whip to vote down the amendment.The vote signalled turmoil for the party with three shadow ministers being fired soon after and one quitting the frontbench after the amendment was thrown out.Mr Johnson later blasted Labour’s apathy towards the EU and slammed Mr Corbyn’s pledge to scrap tuition fees.He added: “If I was going to spend £11billion on education I would spend it elsewhere, particularly on the early years.”. 00FastNews.
