The U.S. Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan has announced he will not run for re-election in November's midterm elections.
He joins nearly 30 House Republicans who have announced their retirement this year.
The timing of Ryan's announcement came as a surprise, as lawmakers had expected him to leave Congress if the GOP were to lose control of the House in the November vote.
Speaking to reporters Wednesday, he said he wanted to spend more time with his family.
He will retire in January next year.
