आज के बिहार का आधुनिक इतिहास (Modern History of Bihar ) 111 साल पुराना है. बंगाल (Bangal) से अलग होने के बाद 22 मार्च 1912 को बिहार (Bihar) का गठन हुआ था. लेकिन इसका प्राचीन इतिहास (Ancient history) अथर्व वेद काल (Atharva Veda period) से ही है. उस वक्त ये मगध (Magadh) के नाम से जाना जाता है. इसकी राजधानी पाटलिपुत्र (Patliputra) थी. भारत के इतिहास (History of India) में मगध काल को स्वर्ण युग (Golden Age) माना जाता है. लेकिन आगे चलकर मगध का नाम बिहार और पाटलिपुत्र का नाम पटना (Patna) हो गया.
