Inventé dans les années 1730, le sextant permet aux marins de déterminer leur position en mer grâce aux astres. En alignant, via un jeu de miroir, le soleil ou les étoiles avec l'horizon, une limbe graduée et un tambour donnent un degré et des secondes, qu'il faut ensuite reporter sur une carte marine.
