We told you Tuesday about reports that Chongqing Communist Party Secretary Bo Xilai, who's in the middle of a political scandal, had offered to resign from the Politburo. The Politburo is a committee that represents the second-highest level of leadership in the Party.

Chongqing authorities have now denied that Bo resigned. On Tuesday night, Bo also appeared on the state-run CCTV. He was shown attending a Politburo meeting. What that means is unclear though.

The Hong Kong-based Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy was the first to report Bo's resignation. It sent a flutter through the Chinese Internet about the future of the man who many believed would soon enter the Chinese regime's top ruling body—the nine-member Politburo Standing Committee.

That outlook now appears to be slim. Bo's right-hand man, Chongqing's former police chief Wang Lijun, sought asylum at a US consulate earlier this month and possibly turned in evidence against Bo.

Bo and Wang were known across China for their so--called 'anti-crime' campaign in Chongqing. But there have been many allegations that their crime fighting efforts were actually a way for them to target their political opponents.
