Today's topic is going to be spine surgery. How do you know if you need it or not? As a spine surgeon who's practiced in Melbourne for over 30 years and performed over 6,000 spine operations, I always like to tell my patients one thing is that we can always operate, but we can never de-operate. Most injuries really don't require surgery. Most injuries to the neck or back are usually just an injury to a muscle or ligament and are not serious. A little bit of time, physical therapy, a few anti-inflammatory medications, and you can be back on your way. In fact, most neck or back injuries do not require surgery. The patient who takes the time to sit down with their doctor, understand their injury, and all of the treatment options is most likely to have a successful outcome.
