Even as floodwaters raged, residents of Beijing pulled together in a show of solidarity. Many found themselves stranded after torrential rains pelted the city over the weekend. Some were cut off at the airport. Others' cars were submerged. And still others simply found themselves stuck on whatever higher ground they could find. The city's taxi service -- nonexistent.

That's when a group of volunteers, using weibo to communicate with each other, scoured the city, offering free rides to those who needed them. One user, going by the name Shuming, offered a ride, his apartment, food, and a change of clothes to anyone who needed it.

The outpouring of support moved many. Weibo user 3D Budui wrote to one of the organizers, (quote) "You bring warmth to our life. The society needs everyone like you to become better. I'll start with myself in daily life."
