Pietersen hit 186 in England's first innings while Alastair Cook also played his part by making 122, becoming the first man to score centuries in the first four Tests he captained. For once, it was the England players making history rather than the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Virender Sehwag, although the latter did reach the milestone of 100 Tests.

Cheteshwar Pujara made another fine century, hitting 135 but England were in charge for the majority of the match, Panesar taking 11 wickets and Swann eight as India were outbowled by England's spinners, giving them much to ponder ahead of the third Test at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

Pietersen was in majestic form, playing several fine shots including the switch hit and setting up the platform for Panesar to take the wickets to win the game.

This was just England's second victory in Mumbai in 32 years and only their 12th ever victory in India.
