Demonstrators gather in Istanbul and Ankara to denounce the release of a police officer, who was detained on charges of killing a protester.

By late night, police were firing smoke grenades into the crowd, dispersing them with water canon.

The unrest began at the end of May when police used force against protesters opposing plans to redevelop a central Istanbul park.

Four people have been killed in the unrest, including one policeman.

And about 7,500 have been wounded, according to the Turkish Medical Association.
