Tesla Model S fire: what caused the blaze that put the brakes on the electric car company's stock? Consumer Reports gave the Model S a 99 out of 100 rating, the best car the magazine has ever tested. But new video shot on Tuesday calls those ratings into question.

The vehicle's owner was driving south on State Route 167 through Kent near Seattle, Washington. The vehicle was in the high occupancy vehicle lane when the driver ran over some metal debris. The driver decided to pull over and the vehicle became disabled.

After calling for assistance, the driver noticed a burning smell. Soon the front part of the Model S was in flames. Firefighters were called to put out the blaze. The fire appeared extinguished, but reignited, requiring several more attempts.

According to the New York Times, the fire was caused by a "direct impact of a large metallic object to one of the 16 modules within the Model S battery pack." On the Tesla Model S, the battery pack is located under the cabin floor. Tesla noted the flames were contained to the front of the vehicle due to its design and construction.

The Tesla Model S has a liquid-cool 85 kilowatt-hour battery and uses lithium-ion cells similar to those found in mobile-phones. Lithium-ion batteries have been fingered in other fires involving the Chevrolet Volt and Boeing's 787 plane.

The Tesla Model S costs $70,000. Shares in the Nasdaq-traded company have soared about 570% to a 52-week high of $194.50, before falling 13% to $171 over Wednesday and Thursday.
