A thief in the UK was found guilty of breaking into a car after police used an anti-theft invisible dye to catch him.

Yafet Askale, 28, was caught after breaking into a vehicle fitted with a traceable liquid called SmartWater, which contains a fingerprinted dye that is only visible under ultraviolet light.

Askale activated a system installed inside the vehicle which sprayed as he took items including a laptop.

The car was set up by police near Askale's home when he broke into it earlier this year. Stolen property was found at his home and he was arrested.

Police images of Askale show him covered in the spray.

The spray uses a liquid that contains a unique chemical signature that can be matched and traced back to the scene of a particular crime.

Askale was given a sentence of 49 hours community service and ordered to pay £400 costs by the court.
