Originally published on October 15, 2013 br br A British team is developing a car that could reach speeds of 1,000 mph (1,610 kmh), which would make it the fastest car in the world. br br The £15 million car, dubbed the Bloodhound Supersonic Car, or Bloodhound SSC, is powered by a rocket bolted to a Eurofighter Typhoon jet engine. The car is 13.4 metres wide, 3 metres tall and weighs 6.4 tonnes.br br A jet airplane is the only vehicle that can travel faster than the Bloodhound within the Earth's atmosphere. No vehicle can match its speed close to the ground, where the air is thicker. Test driver Andy Green said it would only take the Bloodhound only 1 minute and 15 seconds to travel from the British Prime Minister's office at 10 Downing street to Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5.br br Sponsored by Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Bloodhound project was launched in 2008. Experts from Swansea University have worked on the project for the past five years. The team plans to first perform a "low speed" test, during which the car would travel up to 300 mph (480 kmh) this November.
