Cannibalism was a survival tactic for colonials in Jamestown, Virginia, during the winter of 1609. br br Researchers found the bones of a 14-year-old girl in a trash heap, next to the bones of horses, dogs and cats. The winter of late 1609 was catastrophic for the Jamestown colony as drought destroyed that year's meager crops. Indians killed most adult men capable of gathering food. Scratch marks on her jaw and femurs indicate her tongue and thighs were also eaten. By spring 1610, barely 12 of the original colonists had survived.
