The sudden popularity of a hand-drawn portrait of a Chinese model from the 1930's recently published by the Institution of Modern History at Academia Sinica in Taiwan has led eager netizens to seek out similar photos online.

More portraits of young women from the 1930s have since surfaced online, causing frenzied discussion among Taiwanese netizens.

The models featured in these Shanghai-style commercial posters are believed to have been idols in their day, selling products in a manner not dissimilar from the way well-known models do today.

It's no surprise to learn that the idea that sex sells was a well understood marketing tool even way back in the 1930s.
