Syed Ahmed Shah - My Dress Hangs There... Translation of an original Assamese poem by Rousanara Begum

My Dress Hangs There br br My house was by the sea, br I love the sea. br It taught me how to nurture dreams br Within the heart; br And the constant roar of the waves br Filled my heart with longing. br br Even now, br You can clearly see my ruddy reflection br On the balcony of the multistoried palatial house; br And the spectacular view of the sea br With ships passing br To and fro. br br On either shore, br The statue of liberty br Announces its presence br By raising its hand. br br The mighty echo br Of my muted weeping br Rings across air and sky. br br My red-green dress still hangs br In the prison of your vigilant eyes! br br I still long for that run-away heart of mine br That loved to gather flowers? br br My severed hand, writhes in pain br Among the left-over food br Rotting in the dust bin br What does it want to say? br To whom? br br br The chorus of pain of those gathering br In the middle of the ruins br To save the damned earth br Or to bury it in the filth of the commode. br br br br I understand and get ready! br Many such tender buds br Get crushed under feet and wilt br Many songs forget their beats. br br br Even today, br Time stands still. br The parched epochal bird br Has not flown away till now br Plainness still hangs on br The drying lines of br The mechanical world, br Just like my dress.
