Dr John Celes - Tryst with Destiny (in poem form for India’s 64th Independence Day)

And when the clock struck twelve midnight, br Fourteenth, august, forty-seven, br An Asian nation turned awake, br While world slept on in slumber deep! br br A hundred years of freedom fight br Came to a grinding halt that night, br As Pandit Nehru gave his speech, br ‘Tryst with destiny’ with reach! br br India awoke to freedom life, br Despite a hundred years of strife, br And took a pledge anew to stay br A nation, free with peace each day! br br That moment was so rare indeed; br A nation’s soul was stirred to lead, br And show the world its powerful seed, br As nations totally paid heed. br br India’s history thus saw a dawn: br A struggle great ended that morn, br As success finally newborn, br Did Motherland with pride adorn. br br With freedom came newer duties; br The failures of the past did cease; br The country was given new lease – br A cure for this strange a disease! br br The nation was a sovereign state, br On that magical hour and date; br As leaders vowed to change the fate br Of Indian people’s long a wait.
