Marcus Mosiah Garvey - A Summer's Dream

Marcus Mosiah Garvey - A Summer's Dream

As I lay asleep at midnight, br A thought came stealing over me: br A shadow of a great disaster, br The passing of my Love at sea. br br I heard the chimes of Angelus, br It sounded sad but ringing clear; br I had a glimpse of dear heaven, br For my Love was a-going there. br br The ship was lost in the ocean, br As the storm had raged and past; br Every soul was clothed in sadness, br But my Love was firm to the last. br br I stretched my arms out to rescue, br But my Love was already gone: br A burning light stopped my vision, br It was like shining glare at morn br br There were Angels in the Heavens, br And sunny flowers strewn around; br The singing of Royal Cherubs br Had a pleasing Heavenly sound. br br I can almost see how clearly, br There is a passage made above; br The angels are a-welcoming br The spirit of my dearest Love. br br I am left with my dreams, alone, br In a cold world of sin and care, br For my Love is gone forever, br With happy Angels, bliss to share. br br I tried to enter into Heaven, br But the gates were closed to me; br The Guardian of my destiny br Had not then set my spirit free. br br I struggled still with the vision, br For it was a-torturing me; br My Love was taken to Heaven, br And the sweet face I could not see. br br At last I came to my senses, br I found it was a summer's dream; br My Love was still right beside me, br A creature perfect as could seem.
