Emmanuel George Cefai - The Night Is Young, Still Young

The night is young, still young br The anchorite amongst his beady psalms br Saith as the dusk red turned to strains br Of grey darkening darkening up the hill br Like a cool ball of blackness: br All awhile br The youthful sovereign in his fancied car br Lit up one by one the dizzy stars br Looking on our earth, of all of us: br High stood the crag against the dusk br And all its jutting lineaments br In their proportion huge all hideous stood: br But the sweet veil of night by slow degrees br Hath covered its hideousness unwarily br And with its balmy hands has filmed my eyes br And with its murmurings soft like summer bees br Has numbed my worries: Morpheus br Awaits at the next gate but I will fall br Before I need him: these sweet murmurings br Are those of paradise above, and music soft br As of the spheres azure floats all around: br I am transported, I am moved above br Where the planets rotate in silent rounds br About them their vast seas and oceans large: br Glimmer in the lightning of the skies br With their blue radiance now turning to green br Then to an orange red, then dusky red: br Then in the distance rotating br Massing their hues in one white radiant veil br As if the ghosts have taken to the roads br Where planets rotate in their silent rounds: br The night is young, still young br Yet I feel drowsy in its potions wild br Hills now yield before my feet br That in the day looked high and heavy and tall br My feet no longer weary are, my eyes are closed br And yet I see more than when they open I see: br The air resistless lies; and in its rarity br There is a sound of peace of the blue deep br Moving around as where br Planets rotate in their silent rounds br And glimmer br With their blue radiance turning now to green br Then to an orange red, then dusky red, br Then in the distance rotating br Massing their hues in one white radiant veil br The night is young, the night is young br Saith the anchorite amidst his beady psalms.
