Ernest Hilbert - View of Dordrecht

Fixed light overhead br Delivered to chiseled distance br br Of steeple and rigged mast, br Clocktower and mirrored wharf— br br You held onto something br As music distant and calm— br br Knowing there would soon be br Nothing left of light or any other— br br Sent into far turning of inlet, br Mourned as a gift guarded and lost: br br “There is nothing left of the night here, ” br He whispered as you parted, br br Awed and jealous, desolate— br Distance exquisite as glisten in runnel br br Of warm sand drawn back to foam, br Warning glare diminished to coordinates, br br Far and senseless under a coast of stars braced br With oceans clear and departed.
