I stand midst ruins from the past. br Great buildings that were meant to last, br to show the power of some king br I think time conquers everything. br br The old gods die and temples fall br but leave perhaps a standing wall br On which we can see faint writing. br I think time conquers everything, br br The glories of the past passé’ br There’s nought but rubble left today br and memories to which men cling br I think time conquers everything br br And yet perhaps not strictly true br I see the branches of a yew. br An ancient tree still flourishing br Time does not conquer everything. br br Time can destroy the works of man. br The evidence shows that it can br The yew tree is a living thing br which stubbornly keeps on growing. br br Perhaps the tree will conquer time br if we take the long term view br and see it as a paradigm. br The parts which die it can renew br br 20-May-07br br ivor .
