Why is it only in the winter br that we notice them? br The vulnerable on our streets, br the runaways and those br who have lost their way. br They are there all year around br in their cardboard houses br the places they call home. br br Why is it only in the winter br that we finally become aware? br In the big cities, they are everywhere. br When the city goes to sleep br some huddle in doorway shelters, br where they sleep br covered in newspaper blankets br just to keep them warm. br br Why is it only in the winter br we want to notice them? br They are there through br all the four seasons, br yet it is only in the winter br their plight becomes newsworthy. br What happened to spring summer and fall? br Don’t those seasons count at all. br They are still vulnerable br in whatever season comes to call, br the runaways and those br who have lost their way. br br Why is it only in the winter br that we open our blind eyes br to the plight of these vulnerable lives? br Sadly, to a lot of us br it is only in the winter br and its freezing chills br that we suddenly realize br those less fortunate than ourselves. br However, they are there br everyday of every year br and not just only in the winter.
