Samer Madbak - Poem 035: Alone… Without a God

“Alone”… alone I want to be, br (For multitude is levity) br To shun a lawless silly strife br Aim after Nature, verdure rife br Is sheer anomaly in life br Yet it is not to me br br “Alone”… I say’t convincèdly, br (For solitude is liberty) br Evading boisterous urban noise br Whisking away to rural joys br Are doltish deeds and petty ploys br Well, that is fine with me! br br “Alone”… I shout alarmingly br To deaf ears of humanity br To live in rough sobrietye br To mock the world and wish to die br Is crime, in man’s societye, br But only grace to me. br br “Alone”… I rave incessantly br While mortals simper icily br For he who won’t obey a rule br Who grudges being a supine tool br To them is some consummate fool br But no, he’s not to me. br br “Alone”… I say it desp’rately br Perpetually… but bootlessly br Since all who heard my cry within br Considered it an abject sin br E’en God… He scornf’lly raised a chin br A haughty grin, and said to me: br br “Alone! ! Alone? ? To hell with thee” br And spake He nevermore to me br And ever since that dismal day br The day He turned his face away br I never oped my mouth to pray br And this was mean depravity br To them… but not to me.
