Nkululeko Mdudu - Awake

Nkululeko Mdudu - Awake

It starts off as an ordinary day, br four alarms ring at fifteen minute intervals and I lay br there half awake between thought and dream. br Like a maid or mother she knocks loudly on the door... br 'Wake up it's late! ' br And truly it was- the dream had died till another night, br a species extinct in the world of thought. No habitat br on waking hours for this creature of the night, br so he hides himself as an imperfect plan br or fleeting memory. Big bird clipped of its wings br and forced to play a chicken. An alien tormented br by unknowing consciousness. Sad that a father br should forget his son, and call him madness br when he speaks. This house; this mind br should be enough for both, but choice br brings the bias and one-sided path br that leads to forgetfulness, br and the justification they call 'growing up'. br As if adults do not dream. br 'I'm awake! ', I scream. br How false, how foul that I should rise up today, br no better a man than I was yesterday.
